Education in Poland

Education in Poland for Ukrainians, Belarusians, and young people from other countries has for many years been a promising and affordable option for obtaining quality education. Possible pathways for foreigners to study in Poland:

  1. Full secondary education after grades 9-10.

  2. Higher education in a Polish university.

  3. Doctoral studies, second higher education, MBA courses and more.

Higher Education in Polish Universities

Since 2005, when the Higher Education Act came into force with the aim of aligning higher education in Poland with the European Union standards set out in the Bologna Declaration, the entire system of studies has changed. The main reform was the introduction of a three-cycle system:

  • first cycle – Bachelor,

  • second cycle – Master,

  • third level – Doctoral studies.

The first cycle – a Bachelor’s or Engineering degree – is for candidates with completed secondary education. Studies last 3–4 years (6–8 semesters). Graduates receive the title of Bachelor or Engineer. After this, students can continue to a Master’s degree (1.5–2 years) or choose another program.

Some fields – like medicine, pharmacy, law, psychology, dentistry, veterinary medicine, acting, or film – require an integrated Master’s degree. These studies last 4.5–6 years and lead directly to a Master’s diploma (without division into two cycles).

A feature of the Bologna system is the common use of the ECTS credit system, which allows Polish students to study for a semester or a year at a university in another country where the same standards apply. In Poland’s study plans per semester is from 27 to 33, and for an academic year – 60. To complete the first cycle (Bachelor/Engineer) you need 180–240 points, the second cycle – 90–120, and an integrated Master’s degree – 270–360. By passing exams and completing sessions, students collect points until they reach the required total. Each cycle of higher education in Poland ends with a diploma thesis.

Today, Poland’s universities can undoubtedly boast their educational offer. Nearly five hundred institutions attract international students with a wide range of majors, international internships, and, of course, an EU-recognized diploma. Higher education in Poland for Ukrainians, Belarusians, Russians, Kazakhs and other foreigners includes academic universities, polytechnics, maritime academies, music and art academies. It also covers universities of physical education, as well as agricultural, economic, pedagogical and medical institutions.

Higher Education in Poland – Tuition Fees

Tuition fees in Poland for foreigners vary, as they depend on the university, chosen field, language of instruction, and other factors. However, the cost of study in the Republic of Poland is considered quite affordable compared to other EU countries.

That is why those seeking higher education in Poland come not only from Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Russia and other CIS countries, but also from Norway, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic and Germany. The average annual cost is about €2,000 for humanities, social sciences, economics and technical fields.

Medical education in Poland for Ukrainians, Belarusians and applicants from CIS countries is considered expensive compared to their home countries. Tuition in Polish medical universities is about four times higher than in Ukraine or Belarus. However, the quality and opportunities are much better. Thus, the average price of Polish medical education is about €10,000 per year.

Creative and music education in Poland is also relatively expensive for Ukrainians and other candidates. In addition, to enroll, a candidate must possess the appropriate skills and abilities.

A free study option in Poland is also available to foreigners, but with restrictions. State-funded places are only for candidates of Polish origin. In other words, education in Poland for Ukrainians and other foreigners is free only with a Pole’s Card (Karta Polaka) and after meeting admission requirements. Without the Card – studies are paid. Another way to study for free is through special programs, competitions, and scholarships. Here, anyone can apply if all requirements are met.

Second Higher Education in Poland

Postgraduate education in Poland for Ukrainians, Belarusians, Russians, Kazakhs and other foreigners, as well as for Poles, offers a very wide variety of programs. Polish universities offer from several to dozens of possible tracks in this type of study, usually narrow specializations in a specific field.

Second higher education is aimed at graduates of the first and second cycles who wish to improve their skills, need to enhance their knowledge and raise their professional qualifications. Postgraduate study in Poland as a subsequent level after obtaining a Bachelor’s or Master’s is gaining increasing popularity.

This form of study can respond relatively quickly to changing employer needs – the duration is relatively short (usually 2 semesters), and lecturers are mainly experienced practitioners working daily in the chosen profession. Second higher education in Poland for Ukrainians and applicants from other countries is extensive and constantly developing, so it is worth considering.

Full Secondary Education in Poland

Education in Poland for Ukrainians and Belarusians in technical schools/lyceums is a relatively new opportunity that has been available since 2010 on the basis of international agreements. Admission is possible if you have completed lower secondary education and obtained a certificate.

The main point is that full secondary education in Poland is free for everyone. Studies last three years (lyceum) or four years (technical school). During the studies, core subjects are taught; in a technical school – additionally profession-related subjects.

The studies end with the Matura exam. The Matura is a very important and integral part, since only after passing it can you obtain a school-leaving certificate (certificate of maturity) and enter a university.

An advantage of foreigners studying in a technical school/lyceum is that young people will be maximally prepared for admission to and study at Polish universities.
